Johanna Borenstein
Hometown: Boston, MA
A native of Boston, Johanna Borenstein is
an avid chamber musician and orchestral player. She has performed with dozens of
orchestras across the country including the Asian-American Symphony,
L.A.’s Debut Orchestra, Principal for the Stockton Symphony,
and currently she is a substitute player for the San Diego Symphony. A
student at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, Johanna
has soloed and performed extensively with the Colburn Symphony
Orchestra including performances at LA’s Disney Hall and
Zipper Hall. She has also performed at New York’s
Carnegie Hall and Jordan Hall in Boston. She was the first
flute to join and present a concert with Colburn’s Inaugural
Chamber Music Society which included special performances with
Colburn Faculty and guest artists such as LA concertmaster Martin
Chalifour. Johanna was a featured soloist in the Maestro
Foundations performances of Bach Suite in B minor and the 5th
Brandenburg concerto with Lucinda Carver. She has garnered two
degrees in music: a Bachelors’ of Music at the Hartt School,
a Masters degree at the San Francisco Conservatory, and is currently
studying with Jim Walker at the Colburn School. Previous
mentors include renowned flutists Tim Day and John Wion.
Currently Ms Borenstein teaches a full studio
across several LA counties and collaborates with several orchestras
and chamber ensembles in concert. She was featured in a collaborative
audition workshop in Disney Hall for both the Los Angeles Philharmonic
and the Colburn School. Johanna has also been involved
in the Colburn School’s “Outreach in Elementary Schools” music
program and is an advocate for early childhood music education.
Timothy Hagen
Hometown: Lumberton, NC
Timothy Hagen is a professional studies student at the Colburn
School. A
balance of ambition and versatility mark his professional
activities. His musicality has been recognized with
several major awards, including the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate
Scholarship, the Leni Fé Bland Career Grant, and the
Pasadena Instrumental Competition's Jack Smith Memorial Award
for "Most Promising Talent." Hagen performs
frequently across southern California as a founding member
of the Tonoi Ensemble, as well as in various solo engagements.
He has appeared in the flute sections of orchestras across
the country, including the Winston-Salem Symphony (NC), the
Long Bay Symphony (SC), the American Youth Symphony (CA),
and the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony (CA). He was also
invited to perform as part of the 2006 Aspen Music Festival.
In addition to his classical activities, Hagen has collaborated
with some of today's leading pop artists, from Brad Paisley
to Josh Groban to Michael McDonald.
Hagen devotes a great deal of time to teaching. He is a Teaching
Artist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Long Beach Arts
Council. He completed
his Master of Music degree with honors at the University of Southern
California and was elected to the honor societies of Pi Kappa Lambda
and Phi Kappa Phi upon graduation.
Martha Long
Hometown: Chapel Hill, NC
Martha Long transferred to the Colburn School in 2007 from the
Oberlin Conservatory. She also plays the traverso, and is fond
of learning foreign languages. In her spare time she practices
yoga, and is fond of elephants and stormy weather.
Gina Luciani

Emily Tuan
Hometown: Diamond Bar, CA
Currently an undergrad at the Colburn School Conservatory, Emily
began her musical studies at the age of 5 beginning with the piano
and continued at the age of 12 with the flute. She has been instructed
under Catharine Derenzis and Dr. Martin Glicklich. Her most memorable
accomplishment is her performance of the third movement of the
Ibert Flute Concerto with the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra,
a perfect closing to her high school career. Along with her hobbies
of entering competitions and performing for both familiar and unfamiliar
faces, Emily finds an affinity for collaborating with her fellow
Colburn colleagues to create improvised modern pieces. When she
is not engaged in musical activities, Emily enjoys reading chick-lit
novels and conservations over hot cocoa with her companions.
