Jim Walker
Few flutists today could be called living legends, yet Jim Walker is surely among those few. Jim counts among his successes careers as an orchestral flutist, concert artist, jazz flutist, recording artist for hundreds of motion picture soundtracks, ethnic flutist, author, and renowned educator. His tireless contributions to the flute community have raised the visibility of the flute as a medium of expression. He has performed to great
acclaim with some of the greatest classical and non-classical
artists of our time, including James Galway, Leonard Bernstein,
Wayne Shorter, Dudley Moore, and Paul McCartney. His students now have successful careers themselves and are performing, teaching, and contributing to their communities in places the world over. Click here for Jim's full biography.
Viviana Cumplido
Viviana Cumplido joined the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra as Principal Flute in 2006. A native of Miami, Florida, she began her musical studies at age six as a pianist before discovering a passion for the flute. Her flute studies include work with Fenwick Smith at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Jim Walker at the University of Southern California, Catherine Ransom Karoly of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Keith Underwood. Upon completion of her Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California in 2003, Viviana was appointed the Principal Flute of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and performed in this capacity with the TSO for three seasons. She has also performed with the New World Symphony, National Orchestral Institute, National Repertory Orchestra, and American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
Viviana performs regularly as a soloist and in 2007 was a featured guest artist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra performing Jacques Ibert's Flute Concerto. Also in 2007, Viviana performed at the National Flute Association's Annual Convention held in Albuquerque, NM. Previously, in 2006 she performed Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2 with The Phoenix Symphony. She has also competed in the 2006 Carl Nielsen International Flute Competition in Odense, Denmark where she was the only American semi-finalist. Viviana is active throughout Southern Arizona as a soloist, and has been a featured at the 2004 University of Arizona Flute Festival, the St. Andrew's Bach Society Concert Series, and with the Arizona Symphonic Winds.
A strong advocate of music education, Viviana, while completing her Master of Music degree, worked in many Los Angeles inner-city schools as a Young Musician Foundation (YMF) Mentor, a very rewarding program giving hundreds of underprivileged children the opportunity to learn how to play an instrument. In Tucson she was a participant in the Opening Minds through the Arts (OMA) Program which uses the arts to help reinforce the academic curriculum. Viviana has also recorded several works for flute on an educational CD titled The Tree and the Wind.
Heather Clark
Heather Clark has established herself as one of Los Angeles' most sought after flute players. Her orchestral resume includes present and past positions as Principal Flute with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony, and the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. During the past fifteen years, Ms. Clark has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and numerous other Los Angeles regional orchestras.
Ms. Clark is also a regular in Hollywood's recording studios and can be heard on more than one hundred major motion picture soundtracks including Dreamgirls, Pirates of the Caribbean, X-Men, and The Devil Wears Prada. In addition, she can be heard on recordings of Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and Bette Midler. In 1994, Ms. Clark was awarded First Prize in the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition.
A graduate of the University of Southern California, her teachers include Jim Walker, Roger Stevens, and Gary Woodward.
Karen Lundgren
Karen Lundgren is Flute Instructor at the Colburn School of Performing Arts and serves as Chair of the Woodwind/Brass/Percussion department. Her teachers include Peter Lloyd, Geoffrey Gilbert, Louise DiTullio, and David Shostac. She has performed with the Glendale Chamber Orchestra, the Japan American Symphony, and the Riverside Symphony.
Dr. Martin Glicklich
Dr. Martin Glicklich has enjoyed success as a performer, educator, concert producer, and administrator. A veteran player on numerous motion picture and tv soundtracks, Dr. Glicklich has also performed with the LA Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Opera, Long Beach Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the New World Symphony, among others. His students continue to win competitions and be accepted into the major music schools and conservatories, including the Colburn Conservatory, Thornton School of Music at USC, UCLA, and the Eastman School of Music.
Cynthia Kelly
Cynthia Kelley has both a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Flute Performance from the University of Southern California. She owns Flutacious!, the West Coast flute specialty shop for sales and repair, and represents leading flute makers including Powell, Burkart, Haynes and Miyazawa. She is a Straubinger certified repair technician and occasionally can be found about town even playing her flute!
